Samsung's Galaxy Gear smart watch heads a week of new tech announcements

etails of Samsung's Galaxy Gear smart watch have been revealed ahead of this week's IFA tech show in Berlin

IT may be election week, but in the tech world, this week marks the announcement of a flurry of new devices including Samsung's new Galaxy Gear smart watch.

The catalyst for the start of this tech extravaganza is the IFA show in Berlin this week where Samsung and Sony appear to be leading the pack with Samsung releasing the Galaxy Gear and third generation of its Note phablet, and Sony the second generation of its SmartWatch.

HTC is expected to showcase its new OneMax 5.9-inch phablet which will go up against the Note 3, and Lenovo is rumoured to be announcing new hybrid computers.

Next week on September 11 AEST, Apple is expected to release its next generation iPhone 5S and a mid-market model currently dubbed the iPhone 5C. The new iPhone 5S is rumoured to be much faster than the iPhone 5 and to have a fingerprint scanner.
The game of increasing anticipation about these new gadgets got under way on the weekend with the site venturebeat.com claiming it had been shown a prototype of the Galaxy Gear watch. Venturebeat.com reported it to be more like a fitness device such as the Fuelband and Fitbit Flex, rather than a smart watch.

It said the watch had a large, rectangular 3-inch screen – and was therefore largish on the wrist, and because of its size might not be so suitable for smaller wrists. There’s a 4 megapixel camera at the extreme top of the watch, a power button on the side, and social media integration.

Venture.beat.com says the watch responds to voice commands using Samsung S Voice, and integrates with the Galaxy S phone or tablet. If true, its market will be those with existing Samsung Galaxy mobile devices and those intent on buying one.

The device is expected to come with a range of fitness apps and apparently has a battery life of 10+ hours – which while looking impressive could mean it’s a device you cannot wear all day without recharging.
